In his interview to the British newspaper The Telegraph on June 1, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the United States not to drag his country into the presidential elections that will take place this autumn. He flatly denied his involvement in making public the tapes with the telephone conversation of the former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and the then Vice President of the United States Joe Biden.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he does not want for this scandal to undermine the strategic alliance between Ukraine and the United States. “Why is it necessary to drag Ukraine into this again? Today we enjoy the bipartisan support of both parties
in the United States, at the House of Representatives as well as at the Senate of Congress. We also have the support of the American President. … Ukraine does not want to influence the domestic political situation in any country or meddle in the election process in any country, for that matter”, said Zelenskyy.

The Ukrainian President said that he knows nothing either about possible conversations of Poroshenko and Biden or about details of an agreement between them or even that there was such an agreement at all.

In the words of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, his interest is only in finding out if there was the tapping of their conversation at all and how it was possible that conversations of the Ukrainian President were listened to secretly and recorded.

Seven former ambassadors of the United States to Ukraine have made a joint statement in which they have stressed the dangerous nature of attempts to drag Ukraine into the American domestic policy amid the ongoing presidential election campaign.

In their words, such attempts make for the spreading of “a false and harmful narrative” which is absent in reality and which leads to “the weakening of relations between the United States and Ukraine”.

They decisively condemned these attempts aimed at dividing two countries and called the official authorities on both sides to avoid such steps “which will undermine our bilateral relations and alienate our countries”.
