Ukraine will be one of the topics to be discussed by the presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation.

Though President Zelenskyy of Ukraine wanted to agree his attitudes to the most crucial problems of the day with those of his American counterpart, no positive signals came from Washington until this Monday. Then Zelenskyy tried to reach the head of the White House through Western press.

While interviewed by Axios, an American news website, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he was ready to meet Joe Biden and discuss all details before his meeting with the Russian President. According to Zelenskyy, it would be a big mistake not to have contacts between Washington and Kyiv before the Biden-Putin summit in Geneva. He went on to say, “I believe such consultations should happen face-to-face, because many things just cannot be discussed over the phone. I understand that due to the U.S. President’s pre-existing plans and his tight schedule they might well not happen, but that choice will be only his to make”.

Republican Michael McCaul, a ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that his fellow party members called on Joe Biden to have talks with the President of Ukraine before his meeting with Vladimir Putin in order to affirm the support of the United States for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

And the White House responded. On June 7, the presidents of the United States and Ukraine talked by phone.

In Washington, Jacob Sullivan, the United States national security advisor, said at a briefing that the telephone conversation had been planned beforehand, prior Biden’s trip to Europe and his meeting with Putin. On the phone, the presidents of the United States and Ukraine discussed in detail the major points of bilateral relations.

Joe Biden assured his Ukrainian counterpart of his resolute support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and voiced his readiness to promote its expectations, according to Sullivan.

Joe Biden is looking forward to meet Zelenskyy at the White House in Washington this summer after he will return from Europe, the national security advisor to the American President said.

In his recent tweet, Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked his American counterpart for the invitation to visit the White House. His official visit to the United States is scheduled for July. “I want to thank Joe Biden for his invitation to visit the While House this July. I’m really looking forward to this meeting to discuss ways of broadening strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States,” wrote Zelenskyy.

On June 9, President Biden is going on his first foreign tour. While in Europe, he is going to have a number of meetings with NATO allies, leaders of the G7 and the European Union.

On June 16, he will meet President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Both leaders will focus on European security, particularly war in Ukraine, and the inviolability of American sovereignty.
